Last year in July, I wrote here about the possibility of an Erap 2. At that time, Erap seemed to still enjoy more popular support than the presidentiables then and he was the only one who appeared clear on what he wanted to do for the country like securing peace and order in Mindanao. But that was before Cory died on August 1, and Noynoy had not yet joined the race for president.

I got to meet Gibo at the UP College of Law where he was known to be an exceptional student, which reputation he cemented when he topped the 1989 Bar exams. Years later, I would chance on him in Congress whenever I would serve as a resource person for hearings on human rights bills. The last time I personally conversed with him was when we happened to be on the same plane to San Francisco a few years back.

The spirit of our 1986 People Power Revolution that ended the Marcos Dictatorship is strong and happily nurtured in our schools for the ultimate transformation of our society.

"ITO ANG PANATA KO: TAPUSIN ANG KAHIRAPAN." (This is my avowed mission: to end poverty.)"

To this Manny Villar's opponents quickly raise alarums given his multi-million peso advertising campaign vis-à-vis the C-5 controversy: all that money would be recovered through presidential influence, if not outright corruption. Hence, the joke now about "C-5 at Taga" as against his "Sipag at Tiyaga."

"KUNG WALANG CORRUPT, WALANG MAHIRAP." (If no one is corrupt, no one would be poor.") This is the central theme of Noynoy's presidential bid to be the opposite of GMA and her administration which has been mired in corruption scandals. It also appears to be a dig at Manny Villar's rising star, given the allegations of corruption or at least impropriety as to the C5 extension project.

On Tuesday, Feb. 09, the campaign period for president and other national officials will formally begin. Of course, our aspirants have long been campaigning already. But what matters now is that each of us who will cast our votes must be a discerning voter.

Mayor Robredo instantly reacted to our article last week (through Willy Prilles; email 01/17/10):

"I just read your Vox Bikol column, which raises the question: "Is "Intermediate" the "Best?""

Jesse Robredo is set to finish his third term as Mayor of Naga on June 30. With his first three terms from1988-1998 and his succeeding three terms from 2001-2010, he will then have been in power for 18 long years.

Now that the New Year is well underway, it is best we also start defining our action agenda. Our over-arching concern this year, of course, is environment. Hence, we may consider our own muddy experience with Ondoy and other climate change catastrophes across our land vis-à-vis the annual World Development Report 2010 of the World Bank.

Every New Year finds us listing our resolutions for a brand new start. This usually covers our personal and family lives as well as our work. But an important aspect which we often take for granted is the community in which we live in, that, is, society at large from our own barangays and localities to the nation and the world.

Here, tradition bids us to consider the "Urbi et Orbi" message of no less than our Holy Father.

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

This is the message of Christmas that we take to heart each year.

This Christmas is even more special since it comes with our celebration of the Year for Priests that Pope Benedict XVI opened on June 19, 2009, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the 150th anniversary of the death of Saint John Mary Vianney, patron of parish priests.

As the grim details of the Maguindanao slowly come out, we find ourselves at a loss for words to describe it other than -

UNSPEAKABLE, BARBARIC.

And equally for us all, we assert that the massacre is not "a mere aberration" as Malacañang puts it. In truth, it stands as a stark reminder of unfettered lawlessness in the country by lawless elements tolerated, if not encouraged by direct support or inaction, by the "Strong Republic" of the present dispensation.

On television a few days ago, Sen. Nene Pimentel expressed his non-support of Noynoy Aquino.

"He needs more seasoning," Sen. Pimentel said.

Admittedly, while Noynoy has surged passed all the other presidentiables in surveys after surveys, Sen. Pimentel is correct to a point.

On Friday last, I fetched my daughter from school at Poveda. If you happen to do this routine, you normally scout almost every student on sight, whether walking or running towards the exit gate, just sitting idly by, reading or chatting with friends, laughing or crying, or otherwise simply playing tag or hide and seek on the grounds until you finally see your child.

Following the EDSA Revolution of 1986, one of the innovations the writers of the 1987 Constitution introduced was the "free and open party system" or multi-party system. Simply put, this is a multiple choice selection for voters based on allowing as many political parties people would want to organize.

We Filipinos have been known to reveal our real sentiments in jokes. This avenue for expression may be traceable to our history of colonial subjugation, oppression under Martial Law, and the iron hand of the present " Republic."

True enough, in the wake of the massive flooding in Metro Manila brought by typhoon "Ondoy," the latest joke to come out was about the Rainforest Park in Pasig City.

The devastating flood of September 26, 2009 in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces brought by typhoon "Ondoy" (Ketsana) has hammered once again the question of preparedness.

But while the administration's 2010 bet for president, Defense Sec. Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro, coordinated rescue and relief efforts, he was also blaming climate change as the overarching cause of people's misery and the great loss of lives.

Mar has accepted Noynoy's offer to run for vice president under the Liberal Party. But this is anything but definite. It was actually the only logical thing to do for Mar after he gave way to Noynoy in a purely internal affair within the LP. And I maintain that to push through with such an exclusive tandem would be a tragic blunder for 2010.
