MANILA, Feb. 18, 2010-Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Fr. Jose Araneta-Cabantan as the new Bishop of Malaybalay in Bukidnon province.

The bishop-elect succeeds Bishop Honesto Pacana, whose resignation was accepted by the pontiff, upon having reached the age limit of 75.

The priest's appointment was released in the Vatican at high noon Thursday, Rome time. It was announced simultaneously in Manila, at 6 p.m. by the Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams, apostolic nuncio to the Philippines.

MANILA, February 18, 2010-A CATHOLIC priest who has marched with peasants and indigenous peoples in street protests is filling an important position in the Church's social action apostolate.

Early this February, a priest in charge of Calapan's Mangyan Missions has been appointed to the Episcopal Commission on Social Action, Justice and Peace (ECSA,JP) of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) which is often referred to as the National Secretariat for Social Action (NASSA).

MANILA, February 11, 2010-As the political campaign season turns to high gear this week, Catholic prelates called on electorate to be responsible and well informed.

This was the appeal of Kalookan Bishop Deogracias Iniguez, Jr. as he also appealed to the candidates for their sincerity in seeking public office.

The same sentiment was expressed by Cotabato Auxiliary Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo who also called on politicians to heed their conscience and inform the electorate of what is true, accurate and correct.

LEGAZPI CITY, Dec. 30, 2009-The provincial government spends at least P1.2 million daily for the upkeep of over 10,000 families who lived in evacuation centers for the past 17 days, since Mayon Volcano began belching ash and lava more than two weeks ago.

This, according to Albay Governor Jose Sarte Salceda, as he acknowledged the donations received by the Provincial Disaster Management Office from various local and international donors.

Caceres Archbishop Leonardo Legaspi, in a New Year Message, said the automated elections give fresh hope to the electorate that it will truly reflect the people's will.

LEGASPI City, Dec. 10, 2009- The transfer of Masbate Bishop Joel Z. Baylon to the Diocese of Legazpi brought sadness to his parishioners. But the diocesan clergy suffered another blow when one of its priests died December 8 in a motorcycle accident along the National Highway at Barangay Cayabon, Milagros, Masbate.

The fatality was identified as Fr. Norman Crisostomo De Jesus, popularly known as "Father Aga," 38 years old and pioneer parish priest of a newly-created parish in Calumpang, Balud, Masbate.

LEGAZPI City, Dec. 9, 2009-The Province of Albay, famous for its Mayon Volcano, is in the thick of preparations to welcome its sixth bishop, the 55-year old Bishop Joel Z. Baylon, in fitting liturgical reception and canonical installation at the St. Gregory the Great Cathedral at 4:00 P.M. tomorrow.

The Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams and the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Manila His Eminence Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales will lead about 30 other bishops from across the country.

MANILA, Dec. 3, 2009- The 79-year old Irish missionary who was recently held by unidentified armed men in southern Philippines for 31 days left at 1:05 AM today on board Etihad Flight EY 421 for a five-week vacation in Ireland by way of Abu Dhabi.

Interviewed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport past midnight today, Fr. Sinnott said "I feel find going back home and looking forward to the weather, it's windy, wet and cold."

MANILA, November 17, 2009-After over a month in captivity in the boondocks of Southern Philippines, Irish Missionary Fr. Michael Sinnott said he will definitely go back to Pagadian City.

Speaking at the CBCPNews - CMN sponsored public affairs program "The Forum" this morning, the missionary said he has considered Pagadian City his home.

Though he admitted everything would depend on the decision of his immediate superior Fr. Patrick O'Donoghue and Pagadian bishop Emmanuel T. Cabajar, CSsR, Sinnott is optimistic of this return within the next few days.

MANILA, Nov. 20, 2009- The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is set to release guidelines for Catholic voters on how to choose their candidates in the 2010 elections.

Initiated by the CBCP's Episcopal Commission on Family and Life (ECFL), the guidelines will stress the church's position on family and life issues.

Fr. Melvin Castro, ECFL executive secretary, said the "catechism for Catholic electorate" will also deal specifically on the controversial Reproductive Health bill in Congress.

COTABATO CITY, November 12, 2009-Fr. Michael Sinnott, the Columban missionary who was abducted October 11 in Pagadian City, was released around 4:30 this morning in Sangali, Zamboanga City.

The Irish missionary was turned over by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to agents of the Philippine government.

BACACAY, Albay, Nov. 10, 2009- At least 400 priests from the Archdiocese of Caceres and the Dioceses Legazpi, Sorsogon, Daet, Masbate, Libmanan and Virac have gathered at the Bethlehem Retreat Center, this town for their regional clergy retreat which began yesterday and will end on Friday.

The retreat is centered on the theme "Revisiting the Priesthood in the Light of St. John Mary Vianney's Life and Example."

The region's second Catholic radio station has survived its most difficult challenges and will continue its mission as an effective medium in bringing the faith closer to the people, he said.

The occasion also marked its transfer to its new location at the heart of the city's business district.

LEGAZPI CITY, October 6, 2009--The Filipino community in Kuwait will celebrate the third annual feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia on Friday, October 9, at the Vicariate Apostolic of Kuwait's Holy Family Cathedral Parish, Kuwait City.

Legazpi apostolic administrator Lucilo B. Quiambao said he was invited by Albayano priest Fr. Ruben Barrameda and Kuwait's Vicar Apostolic Camillo Ballin MCCJ to grace the occasion with his presence.

He and Fr. Rolando T. Panesa will leave for Kuwait today.

LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 19, 2009-The local Church in Catanduanes is up in arms in opposition to the proposed mining operations in the province claiming the activity will lead to environmental destruction.

Virac Bishop Manolo Delos Santos registered his flock's opposition to the proposed mining operations in Catanduanes at a public hearing conducted by the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee chaired by Senator Jamby Madrigal at Pepperland Hotel, this city, to investigate a mining contract granted to a mining company without public consultation.

MANILA, July 15, 2009-A Mindanao-based prelate said the government should not just rush amnesty in favor of the Abu Sayyaf members responsible for the kidnapping and release of ICRC volunteers "because of the track record of kidnapping" over the past few years.

In a radio interview, Prelature of Marawi Bishop Edwin Angot Dela Pena, MSP, said previous Abu Sayyaf victims are asking for justice.

"I think we have to satisfy the demands of justice as there are minimum requirements of love and justice although we can talk about amnesty later," the prelate said.
