LEGAZPI City, Oct. 11, 2009- "DwBS will continue to play its role in society through its relevant programs and in spreading the Good News," thus said Bishop Lucilo Quiambao during the Thanksgiving Mass marking the station's 18th anniversary and re-launch recently.

The region's second Catholic radio station has survived its most difficult challenges and will continue its mission as an effective medium in bringing the faith closer to the people, he said.

The occasion also marked its transfer to its new location at the heart of the city's business district.

LEGAZPI CITY, October 6, 2009--The Filipino community in Kuwait will celebrate the third annual feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia on Friday, October 9, at the Vicariate Apostolic of Kuwait's Holy Family Cathedral Parish, Kuwait City.

Legazpi apostolic administrator Lucilo B. Quiambao said he was invited by Albayano priest Fr. Ruben Barrameda and Kuwait's Vicar Apostolic Camillo Ballin MCCJ to grace the occasion with his presence.

He and Fr. Rolando T. Panesa will leave for Kuwait today.

LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 19, 2009-The local Church in Catanduanes is up in arms in opposition to the proposed mining operations in the province claiming the activity will lead to environmental destruction.

Virac Bishop Manolo Delos Santos registered his flock's opposition to the proposed mining operations in Catanduanes at a public hearing conducted by the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee chaired by Senator Jamby Madrigal at Pepperland Hotel, this city, to investigate a mining contract granted to a mining company without public consultation.

The clergy meeting slated from October 13-15 at the San Carlos Seminary's Lay Formation Center is in response to the bishops' call for the formation of "circles of discernment" among the clergy.

NAGA CITY, Sept. 20, 2009-Thousands of devotees, armed with rosaries, lighted candles and white handkerchiefs lined up the opposite banks of Naga River from midday to early evening yesterday shouting "Viva La Virgen!" and "Viva Divino Rostro".

Traffic stood still along the city's main roads as several thousands of devotees regionwide joined the procession of the region's patroness.

MANILA, July 27, 2009-The head of the Catholic bishops' leadership expressed dissatisfaction at President Arroyo's State of the Nation Address (SONA) Monday.

Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines president Archbishop Angel Lagdameo said the SONA did not stick with the truth when Arroyo described the state of the nation.

MANILA, July 15, 2009-A Mindanao-based prelate said the government should not just rush amnesty in favor of the Abu Sayyaf members responsible for the kidnapping and release of ICRC volunteers "because of the track record of kidnapping" over the past few years.

In a radio interview, Prelature of Marawi Bishop Edwin Angot Dela Pena, MSP, said previous Abu Sayyaf victims are asking for justice.

"I think we have to satisfy the demands of justice as there are minimum requirements of love and justice although we can talk about amnesty later," the prelate said.

MANILA, July 10, 2009─Cotabato Archbishop Orlando B. Quevedo, OMI deplored the recent bombing in Cotabato City that left several people dead and wounded others, saying that the dastardly act "is a heinous crime that cries out to heaven."

"In strongest terms, I condemn this inhuman and unconscionable act of murder so senseless and so indiscriminate," said the prelate.

MANILA, July 3, 2009-The recent decision of the Senate of the Philippines' leadership to recall several whistleblowers' security escorts will unnecessarily put their lives at risk and discourage future whistleblowers from coming out according to Catholic church leaders.

CBCP President and Jaro (Iloilo) Archbishop Angel N. Lagdameo said the decision will "cast some fear on future whistleblowers" because they will be deprived of their safety.

Manila, June 12, 2009-Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes, SVD said faithfulness to the priesthood remains the challenge they face this coming "Year of the Priest" scheduled to begin on Friday, June 19.

In an interview over Radio Veritas, the prelate said there have been instances when priests "doubt their identity" and get confused of their roles while some get involved in political activities.

"Our desire is to go back to our original vocation, that we are specially called by Jesus Christ to participate in His work in evangelizing the world," the 65-year old prelate said.

Manila Archbishop Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales said he has been alarmed with the growing number of entrepreneurs now known as "event organizers" and "wedding planners" involved in the smallest details of weddings who sometimes turn the solemn rite into a "show" or "presentation."

MANILA, April 8, 2009─The world's leading human rights organization is looking at the Catholic Church to consistently make its moral voice heard against the series of human rights violations happening in the country.

Human Rights Watch Director Kenneth Roth in a press briefing yesterday morning said they need the Church's moral authority to stress that "these (targeted killings) are wrong and a different solution has to be found."

Roth's group is in the country to investigate the killings perpetrated by the so-called death squads in Davao.

After the dialogue last Thursday between lawmakers, Catholic bishops and some farmers, Nograles said they are committed to pass the bill with appropriate reforms.

MANILA--The country ’s oldest Catholic prelate, Bishop Manuel P. Del Rosario, emeritus of Malolos and a Bikolano, passed away at 1:00 A.M. today, at age 93.

Del Rosario has been confined to a wheelchair since he was paralyzed due to a stroke in 1963 while attending the conferences of the Second Vatican Council in Rome. The prelate died of pneumonia at Yanga Hospital in Bocaue, Bulacan according to his nephew newly-appointed SEC Commissioner Manuel B. Gaite.

“He is the country’s last living bishop ordained under Vatican I,” said Commissioner Gaite, a former seminarian.

Thus said businessman-turned-Catholicevangelist Mike Velarde in an interview with Radio Veritas yesterday.

He disclosed he had personal plans which he described as “a dream” of running for the presidency, though he admitted he is satisfied with his being a “servant leader” of El Shaddai, a large Catholic Charismatic group which he founded.
