LEGAZPI CITY (2 March 2010) - RICE FARMERS in a village in Oas, Albay endured sleepless nights and kept watch on a mercury bulb that drew thousands of Rice Black Bugs (RBB) or locally known as "itom na Tayangao" which had infested more than 690 hectares of ricefields in the third district of Albay province.

Albay Agriculture official, Ruben Limos, said the farmers are doing "light-trapping" which drew the bugs to the mercury light while the farmers gather the pest in sacks and dispose of them.

CAMP OLA, LEGAZPI CITY (24 February) - THE MOUNTING VIOLENCE in the province of Masbate has again claimed another life.

An elementary school principal in Barangay Nursery, Masbate City was reported to have been shot according to the Regional Election Monitoring Action Center (REMAC) at the PNP Regional Office-5 here, on Tuesday (February 23).

The Masbate police office identified the victim as, Ruel Doroja Gonzaga, 38, principal of the Nursery Elementary School in Masbate City.

IRIGA CITY (18 February) - ABOUT 400-HECTARES of grass-lands and some forested areas in the territorial area of six barangays in Mt. Asog were razed by spreading grass-fires about 2:00 P.M. of 17 February, the City Mayor's Office in this locality reported today.

It was not certain how the grass fires started, but the PAGASA warned over radio-broadcast that the increasing warm weather in Cam. Sur province brought by the El Niño dry-spell has brought risk to small fires commonly done by farmers to clear fields.

NABUA, CAM. SUR (9 February) - THE CHIEF OF POLICE in this Rinconada town has been under fire from reporters, after reportedly excluding the name of the town Mayor of Bato in an apprehension report on the conduct of gun ban checkpoint in San Roque, Nabua, the other day.

Nabua Police Chief Insp. Roderic Campo was unclear in a report to the Cam. Sur Provincial Police Office on the apprehension of three individuals, two of which were identified as Gilbert Osea, a former policeman, and Marlon Nieva the driver of the Starex van reportedly owned by Bato Mayor Janette Bernaldez.

CANAMAN, CAM. SUR - AFTER THE CITY GOVERNMENT of Naga had ignored an appeal by more than 30 business establishments, including a school and a hospital to reconsider the removal of barricades in the implementation of a "one-way" experimental traffic along Panganiban Drive since May last year, Public Works regional director Danilo C. Manalang had intervened by directing the local DPWH district to notify the City government of the removal of the said obstructions along Panganiban Drive, a national highway.

CAMP OLA, LEGAZPI CITY (11 December) - SEVEN SUSPECTED MEMBERS of the communist New People's Army's "Celso  Minguez Command" operating in Sorsogon province have been charged with Multiple Murder and Frustrated Murder.

Reportedly identified by the PNP Intelligence through witnesses, the suspects were charged together with some 14 other unidentified members of the communist movement in Sorsogon.

CAMP OLA, LEGAZPI CITY (11 December) - AFTER TWO GUNMEN attempted to assassinate a provincial board-member in Kalipay, Masbate City last December 7, the PNP regional office in Bikol and COMELEC have expressed concern that the shooting incident  may again be a prelude to the traditional culture of violence during elections in this island-province.

NAGA CITY (2 December) -THREE MORE SUSPECTS FELL TO THE POLICE, after a major suspect in the robbery-slay of a businessman and his house-boy   in Libmanan Cam, Sur voluntarily surrendered to the Libmanan  PNP, the police provincial office here reported last December 1.

NAGA CITY (2 December) - THREE WERE REPORTED DEAD and 15 others injured in a reported collision of a loaded multi-cab vehicle owned by the San Fernando local government and a 10-wheeler truck along the Maharlika Highway at Sitio Baraca, Barangay Del Pilar, San Fernando, Cam. Sur, about 7:00 A.M. on Tuesday (Dec. 1).

The Universidad de Sta. Isabel-Mother Seton Hospital spokesperson Rowena Guadaña had confirmed the identities of three "DOA" victims as: Barangay Councilor Jerry Notado, 36, (driver of the multi-cab) Herwin Santiago, and Victor Noora Jr.

NAGA CITY (30 November) -- AFTER THE CHAIR of the Bicol Regional Development Council (RDC) in Legazpi City had directed the temporary suspension of the construction of the P 1.9- Billion, Libmanan-Cabusao Dam Project (LCDP), to give way its review, the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) regional official here said they will cooperate with the team from the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the DENR tasked by the RDC to conduct the project assessment.

LEGAZPI CITY (22 October) - CASH REPORTEDLY AT HALF MILLION PESOS was reported stolen at the office of Engineer IV Arnold Matamorosa, head of the Task Force Office for the Albay Second Congressional District of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

However, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Bicol district office Legazpi City head, Atty. Manuel Antonio M. Eduarte, bared that the reported theft puzzles NBI investigators; evidence of forcible entry was only found on the door entrance of Matamorosa's office and none on the major entrances of the office building.
