Coming all the way from United States, Dr. Filipinas Rigoroso-Alfelor, eldest daughter of UNEP Matriarch Dr. Remedios Rigoroso-Alfelor and former Camarines Sur Governor Felix O. Alfelor Sr, also the current Class President of then Apolinario Mabini School, now University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP), graced the thanksgiving get-together of UNEP High School Batch 1959 held at the Felix O. Alfelor Sr building, last weekend at Iriga City.

The Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas-Bikol (KMP-Bikol) and the human rights group KARAPATAN-Bikol condemned the illegal arrest and detention of the 43 health workers in Morong, Rizal last Saturday. The health workers were in a Luzon-wide health training of the Council for Health and Development (CHD) and the Community Medicine Development Foundation (CMDF).

Tito Genova Valiente, a Bikolano public anthropologist and columnist of Vox Bikol, is one of the three speakers invited to deliver the keynote address in the 2nd National Art Studies Conference on Feb. 18-19, in the Tambunting Hall of the National Museum. The other two speakers are Prof. Eufracio Abaya of the University of the Philippines-Diliman and Prof. Judy Freya Sibayan of the De La Salle University.

Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) recently opened 10 new branches beefing up its network to 60 branches nationwide. Last January 18th, PVB simultaneously opened 10 new branches all over the country. These are located in Pasay City, Malolos, Bulacan; Santiago City, Isabela; Olongapo; Lipa, Batangas; San Pablo, Laguna; Kalibo, Aklan; Tagbilaran, Bohol; Pagadian, Zamboanga de Sur; and Koronadal.  Late last 2009, the Bank opened 5 new branches in Luzon as part of its branch expansion and rationalization plan.

Naga City -- The Philosophy Department of the Ateneo de Naga University is sponsoring a regional convention on Philippine politics as part of its annual Philosophy Week celebration.

Dubbed "Decoding Philippine Politics: An Interdisciplinary Approach," the convention features lectures from noted author and Bikol historian Danilo M. Gerona, Center for People Empowerment in Governance (CenPEG) director Bobby Tuazon, human rights lawyer Atty. José Maria Carpio, and Marxist scholar and Ateneo de Naga President Fr. Joel Tabora, S.J., among others.

Legazpi City (21 January) -- The environmental institution PANGATAMAN-Bikol (Bicol Center for Environmental Protection) has enjoined the new bishop of Legazpi to support the fight against mining in Rapu-rapu Island even as it raised the alarm that Lafayette is again gearing to further exploit Rapu-Rapu Island to the detriment of its residents and the environment.

According to a statement released by the environmental group, Lafayette is already operating in three villages of the island.

The Ateneo de Naga University Press will launch the reprinted books of Fr. Wilmer Joseph S. Tria and poet Kristian Sendon Cordero this coming January 25, 2010 at the Richie Fernando Hall (3PM), Ateneo de Naga University in Naga City.

First published in 2006, the Ako asin An Kapwa Ko is a seminal work of Fr. Tria that encourages learners to use the Bikol language in the task of philosophizing.

Naga City (16 January) - Caceres Archbishop Leonardo Legaspi has appealed to the Catholic faithful of his archdiocese to help the victims of the tragic earthquake in Haiti.

In an archdiocesan circular sent 16 January, Archbishop Legaspi appealed that a second collection during all Sunday masses of January 17 be made as aid to the victims of the intensity 7.0 earthquake in Haiti.

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur A member of the Philippine Army identified as Pfc Romeo Z Daza was shot to death by communist rebels at Brgy Veneracion, Pamplona, Camarines Sur last 29 December.

Pfc Daza was assigned at Cuco Detachment under Charlie CAFGU Company, 22IB, 9ID, PA based at Brgy Cuco, Pasacao, Camarines Sur. He suffered three gunshot wounds in the chest and two in the head that immediately resulted to his death. His remains were later brought to Bicol Medical Center.

NAGA City (28 November) --  Tomas "Nonoy" Rentoy VII (30-199) and Irvin C. Ayo (30-54) last November 27 were elected as the new chapter president and chairman of the board, respectively, of the Kabalikat Bicol Naga City (KB30) Chapter effective January 1 - December 31, 2010.

Rentoy, one of the pillars of KB Bicol and the perennial operations chief of the chapter, will replace Engr. Salvador "Buddy" Altar (30-129) who steered the KB30 chapter with flying colors.  Altar was elected as the vice chairman of the board.
